Many of the attractions that would be fun for families to participate in together are only open during 9-5 hours or on weekends. Weekends can be a great time to explore, but for many families this means fighting with crowds or competing with athletic schedules. While this can limit a family’s ability to fully participate in all that Denver has to offer in the way of museums and other child-oriented attractions, a number of museums offer “after hours” type events or stay open late one day a week, which makes it more feasible for everyone to enjoy all that Denver has to offer.
The Children’s Museum at the Marsico Campus
The Children’s museum has something to offer kids of all ages, and it was recently renovated within the last year with even more exhibits. While the museum closes at 4 pm on weekdays and 5 pm on weekends, on Wednesday nights they stay open until 7:30 pm, which makes it possible for parents and kids to go after school or work.
The Downtown Aquarium has a lot to offer those residing in a land-locked state. Parents and kids can see underwater creatures that typically reside hundreds or thousands of miles away and gain an understanding of how sea creatures live. The aquarium stays open until 9 pm Sunday – Thursday and 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday nights. What’s more, the aquarium offers a variety of discounts for evening visitors, including those to admission and parking, which are even more widely available to those who choose to eat at the aquarium restaurant during their visit.
Denver Art Museum
While the Denver Art Museum might not seem like the first place many parents would want to bring their kids, the museum itself provides a number of ways for kids to create their own art and understand the art there at their own level. Additionally, on the last Friday of the month, the museum hosts “Untitled Final Friday” events. During these nights the museum stays open until 10 pm, and there are a variety of performances, installations and ways to interact and curate art during these times.
Museum of Contemporary Art Denver
Lesser known than the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) offers later hours than many local museums. Tuesday – Thursday they stay open until 7 pm and on Fridays they are open until 9 pm. On the top floor, the museum has a dedicated space for child and family use called the Fox Family Idea Box. Here kids can create or hang out with their families, all while existing in a space dedicated to appreciating art.
While many local museums close their doors in the early evening hours throughout the week, a number of local museums and attractions offer an evening or more throughout the week or the month to allow those with more complex schedules to enjoy art. Moreover, many of these locations also offer discounts or other paired activities and events during these evening times, making it even more of an experience for the entire family.
