Festivals for the Family to Enjoy this Summer

Summertime in Colorado means long days filled with sunshine, which provides ample opportunities to get outside and enjoy what Denver has to offer. During the summer months, Denver and the surrounding areas play host to a number of great festivals. While many of them are focused on adult entertainment, there are a number of options that are fun for the whole family, including parents.

The Renaissance Festival

Located about half an hour south of Denver in Larkspur, The Renaissance Festival runs on weekends throughout the summer from early June to early August. Kids will enjoy the musical entertainment, jousting and animal shows, and parents can get into the artisans and the variety of food provided. The whole family can enjoy the mirth and an experience only a day at the Renaissance Festival can provide. Adult tickets cost about $20, kids 5-12 are $12 and anyone under 5 gets in for free. However, coupons are often available at stores or restaurants in the Denver metro area.

Denver Chalk Art Festival

Early on during the month of June, Larimer Square in Denver becomes a sea of color as chalk artists take to the streets and create. Artists utilize pastel chalks to create their own original works or endeavor to recreate a masterpiece. The festival takes place over 4 city blocks, and kids will enjoy watching the artists work and seeing the truly intricate work that goes into creating these pieces. The whole family will enjoy live music, food and drinks, and the unique atmosphere of Larimer Square in the summer.

Cherry Creek Arts Festival

Over the Fourth of July every summer, the neighborhood of Cherry Creek North hosts the Cheery Creek Arts Festival, which encompasses the entire area for 4 days. Attendees can find beautiful paintings, unique jewelry, photography, as well as many other forms of art. But the festival boasts much more, including live music, food vendors and an entire section devoted to kids where they can create their own art. Admission to the festival is free, but bring cash to enjoy the food vendors or drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available).

Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

Every July, Sloan’s Lake plays host to the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival. The festival boasts a marketplace where vendors sell a variety of goods and foods, performers put on a variety of acts, and more than 500 boats race across Sloan’s Lake in dragon boats. Parents will enjoy exposing their kids to this unique cultural experience, and kids will enjoy Dragonland, where they can participate in arts in crafts like origami or a variety of other projects.

Over the summer months, there are a large variety of festivals taking place on the weekends celebrating the arts, food, and culture unique to Denver and the surrounding areas. Whether it’s a celebration of Colorado’s Wild West heritage, cultural celebrations, or Denver’s vibrant and growing art scene, everyone can find a festival that peaks their interest or offers an interesting experience.
