Where the Locals Go: First Friday

Denver’s First Friday events are officially the Mile High City’s way of connecting art with the community, providing a time for galleries and shops to invite the public in and show off local work. From the Highlands to South Broadway, First Fridays are a bustling smorgasbord for families, artists and everyone in between. Here’s a quick guide to help you figure out where you might want to go, or new places you might want to check out. Santa Fe Santa Fe is the original Denver art walk and remains one of the most popular. Santa Fe is much more of an art district than other First Friday locations, and focuses heavily on connecting the community with local artists. With several galleries that have a strong focus on Latino culture, this First Friday art walk is a great way to connect with the often-overlooked community in Lincoln Park and to try some local food, like the legendary El Taco De Mexico. Santa Fe’s art walk is also home to Metropolitan State University’s Center for Visual Arts, …

Where the Locals Go: Denver Tacos

If you’re new to the Mile High, you might have noticed something about Denver’s food culture that baffles you. As a melting pot of transplants and cultures, Denver has everything from pho to gourmet hot dogs, but nobody can agree on who serves the best tacos. There are a few names that always come up, all appealing to different tastes, but there’s never a proven winner and Denverites are very dedicated to their favorite taco places. Here are a few places to try: be warned, if you try any of these places, you might wind up way too attached. El Taco De Mexico For taco purists, El Taco De Mexico is always hands down the best place in Denver. Serving up traditional Mexican plates with little fanfare and décor, El Taco De Mexico is a counter joint with menu items like chile relleno, as well as tongue, tripe and cheek. Despite its unassuming exterior at the corner of Santa Fe & 7th Ave, El Taco De Mexico is a local favorite that you’ll hear about …

Denver Breweries: RiNo’s Hidden Gems

Denver’s RiNo district, one of the most rapidly growing art neighborhoods in the city, boasts dozens of bar and galleries. But among the trendy shops and murals, RiNo is home to several Denver breweries that turn out great drinks and a great night on the town. With wine, beer and cider all brewed right in RiNo, there’s something for everyone and all within a walking distance from downtown as well as nearby neighborhoods. Our Mutual Friend – 2810 LARIMER STREET, DENVER, CO 80205 If high energy and craft beer are a necessity for a good time, Our Mutual Friend Brewing Company is the place to go in RiNo. Located at 28th and Larimer, OMF has taproom hours every day of the week except Monday. Our Mutual Friend’s mission is not only to be a neighborhood gathering place, but also to use local ingredients in small batches to create interesting and diverse beer. Cream Ale and Coffee Stout join staples like Colorado Pale Ale on the brewery’s tap list, which changes on a regular basis. Ratio …

Where the Locals Go: Denver Nightlife

While Denver might be known for its outdoorsy lifestyle and mountain views, the Denver nightlife scene is also bustling. No matter what night of the week, there’s always a place to get down after a long day of work or a weekend on the slopes. From LoDo to SoBo to Cap Hill, these venues are full of Denverites with their dancing shoes on instead of their skis. Denver’s Lower Downtown is often associated with young partiers and post-game celebrations spilling out from Coors Field, but the area also holds some hidden gems for those looking to get their dance on. Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox, touted as a “gastro-brothel” online, hosts a variety of live music and DJs. One of Ophelia’s most unique events is its live music Sunday brunch—and better yet, there’s no cover. Other LoDo options include Beta Nightclub, a staple in Denver’s late-night dance scene and Chloe, a relatively new addition to the scene that also has a strictly enforced dress code for those who prefer to keep things classy. For those that want …
